Chapter: North Central Young Democrats/Birmingham Young Democrats

Let’s face it: the Democratic Party needs a supercharge. The truth is that Democrats won’t prosper unless we organize in every community across the state. Our victory with Sen. Doug Jones is proof that we can do it.
We have already started to organize across the state. As a vice president of the Alabama Young Democrats, I developed and executed our 67-county strategy – our grassroots engagement plan where we visited all 67 of Alabama’s counties to not only build up young Democrats chapters but also assist in the re-energizing of multiple county parties and organizations. I know that without a huge amount of grassroots support, we won’t be able to build any kind of organization we will need for Democrats to make headway here in Alabama.
I have had the privilege of working on several Democratic campaigns in various roles. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. If there is one thing I have learned through all those experiences, it is that if you have an honest conversation with people, stay true to your word, and work hard you can achieve the impossible. The impossible – just like we did with Sen. Jones and just like we did in Birmingham with the election of Mayor Randall Woodfin, of whose administration I have the honor of serving as the city’s first LGBTQ Liaison, where I get to advocate for a community that is often overlooked.
It’s truly on us! We have a rare opportunity here to help build and empower not only young Democrats but ALL Democrats across Alabama. We have some folks that continue to ignore the fact that the Alabama Young Democrats can be a driving force of progress, passion, and persistence that will ultimately lead Alabama Democrats into the future! We know the power of ordinary people coming together to effect change.

Chapter: St. Clair County Young Democrats

Hello! My name is Terri Chapman and I live in Moody, Alabama. I received my undergraduate degree from Auburn University and my master’s degree from UAB. I have over five years experience working in governmental affairs and I’ve worked and volunteered on several campaigns. Currently, I work with at-risk youth and adults working to better their lives and become productive citizens of society. I am currently the President of the Alabama Young Democrats, the Treasurer for the St. Clair County Democrats Executive Committee, and the Treasurer for the St. Clair County Young Democrats. During my time with the AYD organization, I have met countless young Dems from across the state who share the same values I hold most dear. They have shown me that young Dems in this state are ready and willing to roll up their sleeves and work to make this great state more inclusive and welcoming to all. It is because of them that I have decided to run for the Executive Vice President seat of the Alabama Young Democrats.

One of the most important jobs of the Executive Vice President is to strengthen and grow our caucuses. Our caucuses represent the special interests of groups who focus on issues important to their community and bring them to the forefront. I believe it is extremely important and necessary for all groups to be heard if we are going to move toward a blue Alabama. If elected the Executive Vice President, I will work tirelessly to shore up our caucuses and provide the necessary tools and guidance to help them be as successful as possible. In addition, I will also work to build more young democrat chapters in the state and ensure they are thriving and in a position to support local Democratic candidates in the area. Now more than ever, the Alabama Young Democrats are in a position to fill a void in Democratic politics by providing an infrastructure to support our candidates across the state and train up young people wanting to be involved and one day lead. As the Executive Vice President, I will help to ensure young Democrats make a concerted effort to increase youth engagement across the state and get Democrats elected. Thank you for the opportunity and I hope to earn your vote on May 18!

Chapter: Birmingham Young Democrats

I have been involved in Alabama Democratic youth organizing for the past 10 years—as a College Democrat and now as a Young Democrat. I served one term as President of AYD before stepping back to fill the role of National Committeewoman. In this capacity, I have traveled around the country representing the good people of Alabama in our parent organization, the Young Democrats of America.

I am currently a licensed attorney in Birmingham, and have worked professionally in digital communication and campaign strategy for the past six years. I would be honored for two more years putting these skills to use building AYD into an even stronger organization and representing Alabama Democrats here in state and across the country.

Chapter: Shoals Area Young Democrats

Alabama is the home of change in America and young people are at the heart of it. Our state has a dark history with many reckonings it’s yet to deal with but from the struggle has risen national reform and countless heroes. When youth in Alabama held sit-ins at lunch counters and lead the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, the nation took note. And when Young Democrats worked to elect Doug Jones to the senate, we rallied the country around our cause. Young people are the hope of not just Alabama, but America. What we accomplish here can literally change the whole nation.

And though the odds are often stacked against us in the south, I believe that only makes us speak louder and fight harder. If elected, I’m excited to be a loud advocate for Alabama. Alabama is my home and my heart. And I’m ready to fight for it with all of you.

I’m a Democrat because Democrats want every person to vote and every vote to count equally. Republicans want neither, and the people of Alabama will continue to suffer under Republican control if those of us who wish to bring about change become cynical when faced with unfavorable odds and electoral losses.

The struggle for power against a dominant Republican party is difficult, but no fight worth fighting is easy. A brighter future is shaped by those who believe in it. I do, and I want to be a part of the change for the better in Alabama.

Chapter: River Region Young Democrats

Dear Friends and Fellow Alabama Young Democrats,

There is a major paradigm shift afoot. New energy, new leaders, and new organizations are emerging from every corner of our state. This progressive groundswell has been palpable since the 2016 election cycle, but there is much work yet to do before this movement bears fruit. Bridges must be built. Unified messages must be crafted. Organizers & candidates must be recruited.

Are you ready for the challenge? I think we are. That’s why I’m asking you to join me in my campaign for Secretary-Treasurer of the Alabama Young Democrats. I believe our state is worth it. I believe our people deserve it. I believe, I know, that we have the collective power to topple entrenched regimes and dismantle systemic oppression, but only if we can unite and bring that collective power to bear.

I am deeply rooted in Alabama’s dark soil. I am deeply motivated by our dark past. I am deeply committed to equal access and equal justice for all. I am deeply hopeful for an Alabama that we can be proud of, an Alabama where our friends and colleagues WANT to be, and an Alabama with a little less darkness and a little more light, a little more love, and a lot more life.

Together, I am convinced this is the Alabama we can build.
